Photographed at Aransas NWR, Texas. Probably close to .5 mile away, never got close to us on the trail. Still exciting to see, it had been almost 50 years since I last saw a Whooper!

This photo was taken on December 30, 1979, at a time when the world population of Whooping Crane was below 40 birds. Since, recovery efforts and translocation programs have raised wild populations above 500 birds. Still critically endangered, the Whooping Crane remains an important lesson in never giving up to recover a species nearing extinction. Photo was from Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Texas. It was taken on Kodachrome film with a Canon AD film SLR with 400 mm lens, It was scanned in 2018 on a Canon 9000F Mark II scanner.
