So many Juncos. A superspecies complex in North America, juncos present many challenges to the species concept. On our trip across the USA, we encountered most of the well marked subspecies and species. This black-headed individual with clean underparts is more than likely of the oreganus subspecies. They typically winter in the Central Valley -- This bird was photographed near Elk Grove, California.

So many Juncos. A superspecies complex in North America, juncos present many challenges to the species concept. On our trip across the USA, we encountered most of the well marked subspecies and species. The Pink-sided Junco is intermediate between Oregon and Gray-headed susbecies. It breeds in the northern Rocky Mountains from southern Alberta to eastern Idaho and western Wyoming and winters in central Idaho and nearby Montana south through Sonora and Chihuahua in Mexico.. This bird was photographed in Madera Canyon, Mexico.

Note the similarity with Yellow-eyed, but the Gay-headed has a dark eye and lacks red on the wing coverts. This bird was photographed in Madera Canyon, Arizona.

So many Juncos. A superspecies complex in North America, juncos present many challenges to the species concept. On our trip across the USA, we encountered most of the well marked subspecies and species. The Yellow-eyed Junco is a Mexican species hat barely makes its way into the USA in SE Arizona and New Mexico. This bird was photographed in Madera Canyon. Note not only the yellow eye, but also the black face mask and red in the coverts of the wings. I think this species is among the most beautiful of all juncos.
