Photographed in West Sepik, Papua New Guinea, Mar 1985 during zoological expeditions there. This is a scanned image from a Kodachrome slide taken with a Canon AE film camera. Probably among the most unusual of kingfishers this bird feeds on the ground under the forest floor using its odd shaped bill to plow the earth and litter for earthworms, snails, frogs, lizards and insects. The shovel-billed kookaburra is endemic to New Guinea. It is rarely observed and photographed due to where it lives in primary forest of New Guinea and its furtive and silent behavior. Plus it has one of the best scientific bird names!
