I worked on the conservation of this critically endangered shorebird with New Zealand Dept of Conservation in the mid-1990s. At that time there were only 18 pair left in the wild, there are now fewer than 200 in the wild. It remains one of New Zealand's most endangered birds. This photo was taken at the Twizel Propagation Facility, South Island in Feb 1994. Photo taken with a Canon AE1 camera on Kodachrome film and recently scanned. The original is old and faded.
