Observed on October first at Ramsay Park in Watsonville, California. This is the first record of Common Cuckoo from the western United States and only second record for lower 48 (other from Martha's Vineyard). Saw at 12:45 pm in 100 degree weather. Three images are poor as the bird kept to the shadows most of the afternoon.

This is a sequence of photos from our research nest box highway on Putah Creek, California. We have over 200 boxes as part of a long-term study on nesting success and dispersal. This pair is in a box east of Mace Boulevard, Yolo County. The adults are banded, both were raised on the creek in our boxes, and we band all of the chicks produced from our boxes each year. Since we started in 2000, we have banded over 9,000 nestlings mostly Tree Swallows, House Wrens, Western Bluebirds, Ash-throated Flycatchers, Oak Titmouses and White-breasted Nuthatches. The hanging box style has reduced nest depredation by rats. This pair had four fledglings all banded and successfully left the nest box.
