Fluidr / Torre di Santa Maria Navarrese by Clouds Catcher

The tower of Santa Maria Navarrese takes its name from the nearby medieval sanctuary founded according to the legend by a pricess of Navarra in XI century.
The tower was built around 1585 to protect the landing site from the raids of the Saracen pirates.

Già conosciuta come Torre di Santa Maria del Mare, l'area deve il nome al santuario medievale marino, fondato secondo la leggenda, da una principessa della Navarra nell'XI secolo.

Posizione strategica.

L'approdo di Santa Maria costituiva un'alternativa al porto di Arbatax, ma era anche uno degli obiettivi preferiti dei corsari barbareschi che si appostavano dietro gli scogli dell'Isola di Ogliastra, a circa 2 km al largo.

Nella Punta Santa Maria del Mare fu costuita nel 1585 la torres de armas di Santa Maria, presidiata da un alcaide, un torriere e tre soldati. Venne restaurata nel 1782. Rimase attiva sino al marzo del 1843.
