Common Garden Spider, sometimes called Cross Spider because of the cross on its back. It's a species of Orb Spider, so called because they hunt from the centre of an orb web. This one's a female.

English bluebell woods are paradise if you find a big one, when it's at its peak and when the weather is warm. Is not just the sight that seduces, but the perfume too. This one is to the east of Longleat in Wiltshire and in a warmer April than the current one. We were walking with some friends and their dog Kiri in the prime of life.
