With the big horn sheep keeping their distance, I thought it was time to get a longer lens. So what did the sheep do?... they moved even farther away. But I like the Canon 600MM. I purchased a near new late 1990s unstabilized version. It may not be state-of-the-art today, but it was back then ... just like me. The above are a couple test shots of some ewes on the top of a ridge. The lens may weight over 15 pounds, but it does a good job, even today. And on a tripod, you don't need the image stabilization.
