"It's like this big!"

Alright, I'm back.

We were giving our girls a hard time about piano lessons tonight and being committed. So here I am, setting an example.

A second effort using oil and water over colorful background to create some kind-of-interesting abstracts.

The background colors are from beach towels.

Phone cam shot in the Blue Star Arts Complex in San Antonio, TX ( www.bluestarart.org/ ).

I know it's a boring shot, but it was a busy day.

My daughter N. and I went to see Ibson's "Heda Gabbler" last night. It's an intimate theater. This was my second time seeing a show there. It's community theater, but very professionally done.

The Blue Star complex is nice - we went to the Blue Star Brewery (www.bluestarbrewing.com/) before the show for dessert (and a beer for me).

This is much of my daily experience of Texas: back and forth on the highways.

5/365

Another uninteresting phone cam shot, but another day that didn't lend itself to a lot of creativity.

I did get to visit with an old college friend - old in that we got together and talked about work, kids, and how our shoulders hurt - that kind of old.

Woodman received a letter tonight from Sidekick!. It made him really upset. It took him a while before he would share it with the rest of us.

Now, of course you remember I was the last one to see Sidekick! - he was working as a life guard in the Bahamas - and I just happened to run into him while I was down there for a conference ( www.flickr.com/photos/23119666@N03/5615622969/ ).

Woodman finally let me read it. He handed it to me and then went out for a walk. He's not back yet, so I thought I'd share some of it with you.

"Dear Woodman,

I've lived what the Victorians would have called a dissipated life. I finally came to see what you had said about me was true. Living down here in the Bahamas, drinking and gambling every night. And the women - well the women were always coming up to me saying, 'Oh, Sidekick!, your so hard! Can I rub you, just for good luck?'

But believe it or not, Woodman, that life began to run out of meaning for me. It all seemed to blur together. The booze, the money, the women.

And then I was sitting at the pool bar with Alfonso, the bar tender, getting rubbed by a couple of French ladies, when the news of the Japanese tsunami came on the television. When I saw the reactors were damaged, everything suddenly made sense. I brushed off the French women (that's a dangerous thing to do - do you have any idea how many ways French women know how to curse? They're worse than sailors, even the pretty ones.) and headed straight back to my room, packed a few things and booked a flight for Tokyo.

You know, it wasn't one of those things you think about. It was almost like I was outside myself. But I suppose it was inevitable - I did study nuclear engineering during my time at Berkley.

Still, what does it mean to be a man, Woodman? I've never really known. We're carved into this shape, to look like men, but are we really men? How do you know?

You called me a bum and a worthless misfit. You were right.

But for the last several weeks I've been going into the damaged Fukushima plants, where the humans can't go, to gather intelligence for them.

You didn't really want me to come back, so this probably won't matter to you, but I don't know if I'll be able to ever come home, with the radiation and all.

Say 'hello' to Woodboy and R2 and tell them I'm all right.

- Sidekick!"
