Beaver Moon over the Solent - 0500 hrs

The beautiful, bright November Beaver Moon so named after the Beavers who build their dams at this time of year. Also known as Harvest Moon, Hunters Moon, Frost Moon, Trading Moon and Snow Moon.

In the Northern Hemisphere November’s full moon occurs at the time of year when hunters used to set traps before waters froze over, to ensure a supply of warm furs for winter – hence the name ‘Beaver Moon’.

It was a crystal clear night and the Moon was about 12,000 miles closer to Earth than it is normally, but still over 230,000 miles away.

It's is also known as Hunters Moon because being extra bright and closer to Earth, the farmers used the extra light to their advantage in hunting for prey at the onset of winter.
