Here we discover, under the extraordinary light at the end of the day, the gorgeou Latona fountain in full activity with the Royal Way and the Grand Canal in the background, 1670 m long (5479 ft), in a perfect axis. This immense view is called the Grande Perspective.
It required gigantic works during the time of Louis XIV to bring water to the palace. The water came from the Seine river 10 km away (6,3 mi), 163 meters lower (535 ft), via the Marly machine. Nowadays, the waters of the Versailles park operate in a closed circuit; an electric pump pumps water from the Grand Canal and replenishes the park's reservoirs, with rainwater providing the supplement.
The fountains in the park do not work constantly. It is only during the Great Waters that they are active.

Le bassin de Latone et la Grande Perspective
On découvre ici sous la lumière extraordinaire de fin de journée le somptueux bassin de Latone tout en eaux avec en décor l’allée Royale et le Grand Canal au fond, long de 1670 m dans un axe parfait. Cette immense vue s’appelle la Grande Perspective.
Il a fallu des travaux gigantesques à l’époque de Louis XIV pour amener l’eau jusqu’au palais. L’eau venait de la Seine à 10 km de là, 163 mètres plus bas, via par la machine de Marly.
De nos jours, les eaux du parc de Versailles fonctionnent en circuit fermé; une pompe électrique pompe l'eau du Grand Canal et réalimente les réservoirs du parc, l'eau de pluie apportant le complément.
Les fontaines du parc ne fonctionnent pas en permanence, cela serait trop coûteux. C’est seulement pendant les Grandes eaux qu’elles sont en activité.
