It is recommended that you drink a special tea to climb to these hills that remind travellers of Scotland...the hills not the tea :). Although you are in the highlands ... very high ... you are actually south of the equator in Ecuador about an hour outside of Cuenca, the ancient capital and our home base.
There are no guides here, just you and the hills and a lookout tower that serves hot chocolate and high altitude tea.
We spent a day roaming these hills with some friends, and drinking the tea, and the clouds and wind shivered me to my timbers...wait that's pirate talk... let's put it into perspective ... the wind came from one direction and the cold came from everywhere....There were no lightweight jackets here.
A few trails surround the lakes and wind into the hills. You can spend all day here. Some llamas came by to chuckle to themselves as we wondered what weather would come next. They knew :) This is definitely an area where you wear for whatever might come ... and it always will.
Welcome to the Cajas Mountains in Ecuador where elevations reach 13,500 feet. Known as the gateway to the snowy mountains ... it will definitely take your breath away :)
