Took my grandchildren for a ride on this tonight in the car park at Savill Gardens in Windsor Great Park. Worth playing with the sound on.
Regarded as one of the best in the country and one of a handful that can still be steam powered, this set of Gallopers (often known as a Carousel) is available for private hire and public events from weddings and corporate events to country shows and steam rallies.
Built by Savages of Kings Lynne in 1903, the roundabout was restored from a derelict condition betweeen 1985-1990 with further embellishments added since. The ride is decorated with hand-painted carved woodwork, brilliant cut glass mirrors and polished twisted brass. At night the roundabout is illuminated with thousands of bulbs. There are 30 horses and 6 cockerels which can carry approximately 50 people of any age.
Music is provided by a magnificent 89 key 'Marenghi' mechanical organ operated by perforated cardboard.
