The Hoary Redpoll is distinguishable from the Common Redpoll by its frostier breast and much fainter flank marks. This fall I saw my first Hoary, but I have since found four more. An Irruptive Finch Winter indeed!! They rarely leave Canada and are extreme rarities in the Lower 48, but will be found in the upper Midwest border states. People describe the Hoary as having a beak that looks like it has been pressed into its face, but that appearance seems to be due to puffed up breast.
