In the morning at the Sandbach stream, near Thalmassing, which is located in the southern district of Regensburg. The Pfatter stream flows through the village.
The first documentary mention of Thalmassing dates back to the 2nd half of the 8th century. At this time, the village was called Talamazzinga (settlement of Talamazzo). In terms of ownership, it was initially closely linked to the Freising and later to the Prüll monastery.

The Haga Ocean butterfly house in Solna, Sweden, has a no-flash policy for visitors, but yesterday I got to enjoy an exception and was allowed in with my Canon 100/2.8L and diffused flash.

Shooting was very different when able to handhold instead of being limited by the tripod.

One additional nice thing was that because the week before the last one was Easter holliday for the schools in the Stockholm area, they had ordered an additional shipment of chrysalides - but it got delayed on the way here from Costa Rica so yesterday, there were extra many butterflies - but without the extra people.

The beauty here is a green-banded peacock (Papilio palinurus), also known as the emerald swallowtail. Looking at it in this shot, the "emerald" and "green-banded" don't make a whole lot of sense, but seing it with the wings opened makes the name very apparent. Here is a female European wool carder bee (Anthidium manicatum) sitting on the fleshy "leaves" of a house leek (Sempervivum tectorum).

This flower grows low and close to the ground, but the flowers grow like surprisingly tall towers out of it and since they have quite a lot of hair on the flowers, these bees like to collect said hairs and use it to line their egg chambers.

Here is a shot showing the flowers better: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/11122536893/

and here is a short video clip of them: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51870771140/

This is probably my favourite bug of all and I have an entire album (70+ photos) with just shots of them here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/albums/72157667862870066/

To start off the bug shooting for the new year, I tried out my new tripod head (Sunwayfoto DT-03R) and a wireless shiutter (JJC JM-A) at the Haga Ocean Butterfly House (not many other choices available with temps around -10°C here at the moment).

The new gear performed just great and I got some nice shots of this giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) which was very new and fresh. Also, there is a small water drop at its left temple.

I took this shot from a sort of wide "bridge" made out of wood over the water where the rays and turtles swim. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) this isn't as stable as the paved pathways which means that whenever some other visitor is walking nearby, it introduces vibrations. I try to time the shots (and the wireless shutter was very helpful), but this shot isn't as sharp as it could have been if I had been completely alone that day. With schools here still not open for the new semester, there was no chance of that happeing though - lots of visitors.

This is the largest butterfly species in North America and quite spectacular, but still pretty abundant in the eastern parts of the U.S.
