Lighthouse in the Sunken City
The lighthouse on the Danube Island stands near the Reichsbrücke on the city side of the New Danube in the Sunken City in Vienna. The building, built as a lighthouse, was originally a stage setting and was never used as a lighthouse.
The lighthouse was part of the backdrop of the Bregenz Festival stage in the seasons 1989 and 1990. It was part of the production of Richard Wagner's “The Flying Dutchman” directed by David Pountney. During the opera, Senta, a figure in the opera, dived from the lighthouse into Lake Constance.
After another opera was shown on stage in Bregenz from 1991, the stage design was dismantled, including the lighthouse. The lighthouse was dismantled and transported to Vienna, where it was rebuilt in 1991 on the occasion of the “Imagination and Industry” exhibition in front of the Vienna Technical Museum. On the occasion of the renovation, the lighthouse was dismantled again in 1997 and brought to its current location on the Danube Island. Since then he has taken on various tasks as an advertising space, a transmitter for network operators or a weather and city camera.
