I have been trying to understand Jena Romanticism's (ie., Friedrich Schlegel) concept of irony, which has the form of paradox --- ie., logical beauty --- but iI'm finding that its complicated.
Irony is "the continual self-creating interchange of two conflicting thoughts”. (Schlegel Fragments 176). The contradiction of the two thoughts (eg., self-creation and self-destruction) is the condition for reflection.
This fluctuation is deemed to be the core of every creative process, and corresponds, at the same time, to the fundamental structure of the “art of thinking.”
Reflection refers to the action by mirroring surfaces of throwing back light, and in particular a mirror’s exhibition or reproduction of objects in the form of images. Reflection. is compared to the process of the multiplication of an image observed in mirrors set opposite each other.
Hence the self-reflective character of art.
