Forty one years ago this evening, the Great Lakes Freighter Edmund Fitzgerald departed the safe harbor of Superior Wisconsin, to take it's twenty six thousand tons of iron ore to the steel mills. The ship was overtaken by one of the legendary November storms that can whip Lake Superior into a frenzy. A storm of this magnitude hasn't been seen on the great lake since 1913. Shortly after 7pm on the evening of November 10, 1975, the freighter and 29 crew members vanished from the surface of the great inland sea without a warning. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was taken to the public eye by the great Gordon Lightfoot song about the great freighter gone missing. This painting is my rendition of what the ship and sea may have looked like on that fateful night. May all souls that were lost, rest in peace.
