Sunrise in the Himalayas on the first day of 2017. Waking up mid-winter to trek up to poon hill to catch the sunrise having done it the day before was not motivating. However, the beautiful morning that unfolded meant braving the freezing conditions was worth it. Poon Hill is at 3200m, and there are few places in the Himalays better to see the sunrise at. The trek up from Ghorepani is a gain of elevation of about 300m. The panorama of mountains that lays before you is breathtaking. Seeing peaks over 8000m rise up is a sight to behold. Annapurna South and Fang were nicely covered in clouds and a blaze as i started heading back down. The lack of snow covering the mountains had been disappointing, but there had been a small snow shower that night blanketing some of the lower lying areas. If you love mountains and trekking the Himalayas are a must.
