The elegant Great Egret is very common in many parts of the United States, but it is a rare sight here in Edmonton.

This individual made appearance in our city two years ago, providing many of us some unique photo opportunities

The soft light worked out nicely on this late afternoon. And it was a calm day with some nice reflections mirrored on the water.

The Egret caught a small fish

The light was getting poor but the egret was still trying to catch the evening meal. It appeared that only minnows and sticklebacks lived in this man-made pond.

The Great Blue Heron would often take the struggling fish prey and wade into the shallow river's edge to kill and swallow it, presumably to make sure it could not get away. This individual seen here, however, had decided to fly off with the catch to the shallow to eat it.

The Northern Pike, a ferocious predatory fish, became the prey.

The low water level in the Sturgeon River means that it is easy to spot the Great Blue Herons out and about catching fish in the shallow water.

Bright and early one morning in July, I met up with my birding friend, Ivan D. and we were privileged to be able to observe and photograph this heron fishing for breakfast at fairly close range. This heron's fishing skills were amazingly impressive. Within a span of one hour, it caught three pikes. Each time, it promptly swallowed the unfortunate fish head first - all in one go.
