Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) Doe

Siskiyou Mountains – Jackson County – Oregon - USA

The black-tailed deer is one of nine subspecies of the mule deer. It was first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06.
Black-tailed deer live in the temperate coniferous forests along the Pacific coast. These forests are characterized by cool temperatures and lots of rain, but an overall mild climate. Black-tailed deer do not therefore migrate in response to seasonal changes, unlike some of the other mule deer subspecies. Instead, black-tailed deer often spend their entire life in the same general area.

Documentation shot of a lifer. A poor image as I only got one click.

“In western North America, the sweet song of the Black-headed Grosbeak caroling down from the treetops sounds like a tipsy robin welcoming spring. The flashy black, white, and cinnamon males and the less flamboyant females sing from perches in suburbs, desert thickets, and mountain forests. At feeders they effortlessly shuck sunflower seeds with their heavy bills. The showy male puts in equal time on the domestic front: both sexes sit on the eggs, feed the young, and feistily defend their nesting territory.

Black-tailed Jackrabbit- Lepus californicus

Several Black-tailed Jackrabbits live around my house, but it is very easy to recognize this guy. I wish I could ask him in for a coffee and hear his battle stories.

Meet Patch (named for the large hairless patch on his back). He is one of the seemingly countless resident Squirrels around my house. Patch has become so habituated to me that he often follows me like a puppy when I tend to my bird feeders.
