Tan-ts'at-seniphtha (stone standing up) is the name the Takelma tribe of Native Americans gave to what is know today as Pilot Rock. The 25.6 million year old lava plug is all that remains from an eroded volcano. It was named Pilot Rock as it was used for a navigational landmark by travelers on the Applegate Trail. Ironically, nine planes have crashed into it since 1942. Pilot Rock is located in the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument.
