Late afternoon shot, taken at the Col du Mont-Cenis (2.083 m), France, portraying the totally snow-covered mountain slopes, even more than usual thanks to a previous day's heavy snowfall.
I've focused my telephoto lens in the direction of the moon, without missing of course the magical and subtle play of light among the frosty dunes.
I love minimalism and, yes, everything was minimal here: the landscape and the temperature :-)

Night Photography on the Alps

Shot taken at night on September 6th 2012, from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m), Susa Valley, Italy.

A sea of clouds, down below, exposed to the south-east, is lit by the moon (63%) rising in the east.
Yes, a huge mass of clouds slipping down steep rocky ridges from a height of about 2.900 meters.

I have already posted two shots depicting this wonderful moment.
This is completely another photo taken a few minutes before, slightly varying the point of view and increasing the zoom.
It's a 147 seconds exposure, at 225mm on full frame, that's why the slow passage of the clouds looks like a "silky waterfall".
Among the three shots this is the most minimalist. The idea was to get as close as possible to the target, thus approaching the concept of abstract photography... just to detach from the usual "landscape photo" and go deep inside the elements involved: the night, moonlight, ethereal waves of clouds, remote ridges... all elements related to our concept of otherworldly vision.

This has been indeed one of the most otherworldly scenery I've seen so far. Thanks to the intrinsic magic of the night and to the privilege of being there, in such a remote place, silently admiring this amazing moment.

Luckily that night was possible to take long exposures from the north-facing summit area of the Rocciamelone, something generally not feasible because of the very strong wind that doesn't allow you to even stand up straight.

Shot taken during a day of extreme thick fog on the west coast of Mount Rocciamelone (Italy).

To take pictures when the landscape is not visible, well, it can be a problem :-) ... at least the openings are usually moments rich of drama and atmosphere.

Picture taken during the blue hour exactly at the same altitude of a huge bank of clouds hovering in the air, consequently the landscape was appearing and disappearing all the time.

In the distance you can see the lights of the Auronzo Hut (Dolomites), Italy.
Just behind it's visible the mount Cristallo, while slightly on the left, almost in the center image, you can find a tiny dot, it's planet Venus newly risen perfectly to the southeast (in the high-resolution file it's even visible the green halo shrouding the entire planet, certainly due to the highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid).
While the group of peaks "floating" on the left belongs to the Cadini of Misurina. From left to right we have the Siorpaes Tower, just the tip of the Cimon de Croda Lissa and of course the Cima Cadin di San Lucano with the Forcella del Nevaio, which is, by the way, exactly the very same spot shown more closely in my previous photograph.

Shot taken on September 13th 2012, from the shores of the lovely alpine lake Cheserys (2.211 m), high up in the Aiguilles Rouges above the Chamonix valley.

Since I am not looking exclusively for perfect mirror reflections in the alpine lakes, but for any kind of fascinating natural phenomenon, here's a pretty dynamic view of the Mont Blanc massif slapped by the winds at sunset.
Generally the evening is the time when the wind may eventually rage a lot, before settling down (hopefully) during the night. With all due exceptions.

Here, on the left you can see the Aiguille Verte and Les Drus all surrounded by clouds moving very quickly. In the central area we have the various summits of the Grandes Jorasses along with the Dent du Géant, while on the right it's possible to see part of the Aiguilles de Chamonix.
All cherished by a delicate alpenglow.
