Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) on pink Verbena bonariensis flowers in my garden. This underwing shot serves as a reminder of the beautiful colours of this butterfly, even when its wings are not open.
Red Admiral butterflies seem to have had a brilliant year locally here in Shropshire, UK. Although I saw very few in the early part of the year they have certainly made up for it in the latter part of the summer. I have counted as many as 5 in our small garden at one time which is far more than I’ve seen here before.

Silver and Gold (well copper actually) This beautiful but somewhat battered Small Copper butterfly (Lycaena phlaeas) stood out wonderfully on the surrounding silver foliage. The background silver plant is a variety of Cotton Lavender, probably Santolina Chamaecyparissus, I haven’t been able to ID the seed heads in the foreground, yet !

Small Tortoiseshell butterfly (Aglais urticae) in the garden. Normally see lots of Small Tortoiseshell in our garden but have only seen a handful this year, perhaps not such a good year for them.

As the butterfly season comes to a close I’m just checking and clearing my spare SD cards. Thought this Gatekeeper shot was worth saving.
