a rare and shy kind of crane, the wattled crane (bugeranus caruncolatus).
the whole african population is estimated now in 2000/2500 birds , a big decline since previous estimations(8000).
i saw some of them many years ago in moremi (Bw) but i was a very very bad photographer :-)))
last august i had another chance in linyanti (Namibian side) ..birds were a bit far away but i got something acceptable.
as all the cranes, wattleds are omnivorous.feeding mainly on vegetables but they like also big insects, fish and frogs.
as i said those birds are quite shy and they fly away at 150mts!!! so the camera cannot do miracles.

Okaukuejo is the southern rest camp inside Etosha national park.
as Etosha is an arid park the waterholes attract many many animals during the dry season.
the Oka waterhole is very famous and well positioned to see the sunset .for photography it means good light
in the morning but backlight later...the only good evening chance for nice photos is at sunset time.
the powerful african sun switch off and in a few minutes disappear..it's the right time to try.
we spent three nights there and one time we been lucky finding some elephants (loxodonta africana) at sunset.
what a chance!

un unusual and lucky find along the chobe river shores,
a beautiful puku male ( kobus vardonii ) in a wonderful light .
this is a water related antelope .the population in southern africa is threatned and more or less just 100es remains in Botswana .
this is the southernmost population and can be found just in the linyanti/chobe system.
so a very rare encounter here....zambian and other northern populations are much healthier but quickly decrising too.
the problem isnt so clear.seems that puku is suffering human/cattle activities along the rivers and also competition with other
kind of herbivorous.scenticists are studying now what is happening and what can be done to save this last isolated southermost population.
