This female Grizzly Bear had just gone to the effort of chasing and catching a salmon, and she had herself and twin cubs to feed, yet she purposefully released the salmon. The reason is that there are so many Chum Salmon spawning in the river at this time she can afford to be choosy. What she really wants is a gravid female salmon, full of delicious and nutritious eggs, not a male full of yucky sperm. And with her incredible sense of smell she can tell whether her catch is a male or a female. This was a male salmon which she dropped, then immediately chased down another salmon in the hope that the next one might be full of eggs.
