Era l'estate del 1966. Avevo da poco compiuto vent'anni quando ho raggiunto i 4.357 metri della montagna che nella foto troneggia alle mie spalle, la Dent Blanche, la montagna regina della Val d'Herens (Vallese, Svizzera). E' stata la prima volta che ho respirato l'aria sottile delle grandi altezze delle Alpi. Anche se negli anni successivi mi è capitato altre volte di raggiungere (e anche di superare) quelle altezze, quella prima scalata è rimasta magica, inebriante e indimenticabile. Anche adesso, quando mi capita di vedere la Dent Blanche (ormai soltanto dal basso, data l'età parecchio avanzata) il ricordo corre con affetto e riconoscenza alla "festa mobile" di quell'estate dei tempi andati, "quando eravamo giovani e tanto felici".

My first "four thousand" in the Alps
It was the summer of 1966. I had just turned twenty when I reached the 4,357 meters of the mountain that towers behind me in the photo, the Dent Blanche, the queen mountain of the Val d'Herens (Valais, Switzerland). It was the first time that I breathed in the thin air of the great heights of the Alps. Even if in the following years I have had other times to reach (and even to overcome) those heights, that first climb remained magical and unforgettable . Even now, when I happen to see the Dent Blanche (now only from below, given the quite advanced age) the memory goes back to that distant summer, with affection and gratitude.

Una improvvisa nevicata di fine estate ad Arolla, in Val d'Hérens (Vallese, Svizzera) ha imbiancato tutto l'ambiente, conferendogli una veste autunnale. Qui siamo nei pressi dell'Hotel Aiguille de la Tsa un paio di km prima di Arolla, dove per molti anni ho passato un periodo di vacanze estive destinato a magnifiche scorribande sulle montagne dei dintorni (era probabilmente l'hotel più "scalcinato" di Arolla, ma anche il più economico, e i gestori di allora erano persone splendide). Nella foto, in secondo piano, si vede il piccolo villaggio di La Monta e, ancora più lontano, sullo sfondo, si intravede quello di Pramousse.

Change of season.
A sudden snowfall at the end of summer in Arolla, in Val d'Hérens (Valais, Switzerland) has whitened the whole environment, giving it an autumnal look. Here we are near the Hotel Aiguille de la Tsa a pair of km before Arolla, where for many years I spent a period of summer holidays destined for magnificent raids in the surrounding mountains (it was probably the most "shabby" hotel in Arolla , but also the cheapest; and the managers back then were wonderful people). In the photo, in the background, you can see the small village of La Monta and, even further away, in the background, you can see that of Pramousse.

In questa foto, scattata ai primi di settembre del 1984 ad Arolla (Val d'Hérens, Vallese, Svizzera), il Rocher de la Monta (col suo caratteristico pino cembro che è riuscito, non si sa come, a crescervi sopra), meta di tanti climber che si divertono sulle sue pareti, appare completamente imbiancato (come tutti i boschi e i prati della valle) da una improvvisa nevicata notturna. Era il segnale inequivocabile che anche quell'estate stava giungendo al termine, e che era tempo di fare i bagagli e di rientrare in città.
