Back in May 2019, we were in the midst of an unforgettable, month-long road trip through the stunning vistas of mainland Greece. I can recall seeing a few of these Balkan Wall Lizards (Podarcis taurica) darting between the grass tussocks growing above an exposed sandbar at the mouth of a shallow stream connecting the two lakes within the utterly beautiful Mikri Prespa National Park located in remote northern Greece on a balmy spring afternoon. The three of us were swimming at the mouth of the lake, and there were many Dice Snakes (Natrix tessellata) and a few Grass Snakes (Natrix natrix) going about their business, either feeding on tadpoles in the shallows of the stream or basking on this sandbar while we swam! I started to track a couple of these lizards as they skulked around below the grass and observed a few retiring into burrows that were situated on the sloping gravel bar amongst the exposed roots of oak trees. It wasn't until I had this male specimen in the hand, however, that I came to appreciate just how beautifully patterned and coloured these lizards really are. To top this perfect afternoon off, he posed like a seasoned professional for a quick photo.
