Salford Quays

I have a directory full of unstitched panoramas that I have not even bothered to label let alone process. This is an exception, but having shot it in landscape rather than portrait, there was a noticeable chunk missing off the top of the Imperial War Museum when stitched. So, it has laid dormant there for years.

Fast forward to a recent trip down to the Quays to show Paul a.k.a. shutterbug_uk2012 the sights and sounds of the area, ably supported by Eddie ‘Rainman’ Coulson. I only took a handful of shots myself, including a four frame pano, but I’ll save them for a rainy day as I’d like to see what Paul produces when he gets the chance from his busy day job.

But, back to the image… a few tips and tricks and I’ve managed to uncrop the stitched image and hey presto the top of the IWN wasn’t missing after all! A bit of filling in and clone work and it’s turned out to be a reasonable image in the end.

Verona, Italy

My first opportunity of our Italian holiday to shoot early morning and the obvious location - Piazza Bra and the Arena. It always amazes me how little time you have to setup at different location while nature does her thing. From my first shot in total darkness, through the blue hour (invariably less than an hour!) to daylight. Eight minutes of darkness, before the blue hour, which I timed as only lasting 26 minutes - I may have gone out to late, but after all I'm on holiday!

However, as a start to my holiday photo shoot, I managed to bag the shots I was after in the three periods of darkness, blue and daybreak. This is a bonus... a panorama caught just before the street and arena arch lights were turned off. This is a horizontal three frame panorama stitched together in Elements Photomerge with a 2.8:1 ratio crop.

I've quite a few panoramas on my hard drive but my laptop and software really struggled to process multiple images, let along stitch them together. The few I've tried have taken an eternity to appear on screen while it works it's magic in the background so I've never really pursued them. Since upgrading my system to a bigger, faster processor and a SSD drive for the operating system I thought I'd give it another go...

Taken on the way home from our trip to New Brighton for the lighthouse in January. This is a horizontal three frame panorama stitched together in Elements Photomerge with a 4:1 ratio crop. I do like whole numbers!

For a mid-afternoon quite unexpected to get a relatively clear shot of the arena. In the morning there were queues everywhere for the evening show and arena tours. This is a horizontal three frame panorama stitched together in Elements Photomerge with a 3:1 ratio crop.
