Heliconia, derived from the Greek word helikonios, is a genus of about 200 species of flowering plants native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia. Many species of Heliconia are found in rainforests or tropical wet forests of these regions. Several species are widely cultivated as ornamentals, and a few are naturalized in Florida, Gambia and Thailand. Common names for the genus include lobster-claws, wild plantains or false bird-of-paradise. Collectively, these plants are also simply referred to as heliconias.

Nerium oleander is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the Apocynaceae family. It is most commonly known as oleander. Oleander is one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants. Theophrastus described In his book Enquiries into Plants of ca. 300 BC, a shrub he called onotheras, which modern editors render oleander - the root of which if administered in wine, makes the temper gentler and more cheerful.
