This BC rarity was at the Hope Airport from Wednesday until Saturday. While I was there he was eating mice and beetles! These birds impale their prey and are severely declining in North America.

Taken at Doi Lang West. The diversity of beautiful shrikes in Thailand was overwhelming. Here in North America we only get 2!.

We have had an immature Northern Shrike over summering here in Vancouver since May till now July 20th. It is totally crazy as they should be way up north at this time of year in places like Nome breeding. This is apparently the most southerly late record for Canada and North America (with a WI record from June and an Ont record from July 13th in Parry Sound and a couple records in Quebec in June) !
Looking forward to seeing him in August. I've had fun watching him hunt and even had the pleasure to listen to him sing.

I was thrilled to see Canada's first record of Red-backed Shrike in Powell River on Saturday. This bird was found by Iwan Van Veen. It is only the second record for the ABA as well. It was also a lifer! A truly crazy record. Hopefully he finds his way back to Africa for the winter but I suspect he will winter in California somewhere.
