The high Sermenza valley, with the small Walser village of Rima, seen from the trail to Little Altar pass, 'passo del piccolo Altare', 2.632m (8,635ft).
Thick clouds were sticked to the ridge where the pass is located since the morning, hiding the view from the top. I took this photo while descending, just below the limit of those clouds. This is the exact point where Tullio Vidoni, a strong mountaineer that realized numerous exploits in the area of Monte Rosa, but also in the massif of Monte Bianco, in the Andes and in the Himalaya, died under an avalanche during a skialp ascent to the pass in 1988.
After so many difficult climbs, Tullio lost his life during what, for him, was probably just an easy training.
It is the nature of the mountains.
A small tombstone, with a short piece of climbing rope, is placed on a rock to remember one more man that died following his passion.

Nuvole spesse sono state attaccate alla cresta dove si trova il passo fin dalla mattina, nascondendo la vista dall'alto. Ho scattato questa foto mentre scendevo, nel luogo in cui Tullio Vidoni, un forte alpinista che ha realizzato numerosi exploit nell'area del Monte Rosa, ma anche nel massiccio del Monte Bianco, nelle Ande e in Himalaya, è morto sotto una valanga durante una salita scialpinistica al passo nel 1988.
Dopo così tante salite difficili, Tullio ha perso la vita durante quello che, per lui, era probabilmente solo un allenamento facile.
È la natura delle montagne.
Una piccola lapide, con un breve spezzone di corda da arrampicata, è posta su una roccia per ricordare un altro uomo che è morto in montagna seguendo la sua passione.
