Valparaíso, Chile. A few weeks ago, I--along with my good friend Tom--had the good fortune to do some pelagic birding off the coast of Chile. The weather cooperated (although I was still glad to have taken some Dramamine beforehand) and the birds didn't disappoint. One of the highlights was this lone Southern Fulmar that appeared about 3/4 of the way into the trip. In flight, its shimmery gray wings really stand out in the crowd. Thanks for looking.

Bahia de Valparaíso, Chile. Also known as the "Pintado" or "painted" petrel, this bird stands out among pelagic birds given the black and white spotting on its upper wings.
