A street scene in downtown Silver City, New Mexico. Silver City is located near the Continental Divide. Silver City is a desert town situated on the southwest end of New Mexico approximately 154 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas. Silver City was founded as a mining town in 1870. Copper, gold and silver were recovered from ore deposits. The Glia National Forest and Gila cliff dwelling are located nearby. The town was once served as an Apache campsite.
