Hoverflies from this genus are called catkin flies, because they appear early in the year. The females lay eggs between the cracks in bark and both sexes can be observed on tree trunks. They are bee mimics, which may not be apparent looking close at one, but more in the manner of flying. I just had weekend full of great observations of spring hoverflies an will be posting more this week. HWW!
