A short ceremony took place at Milton church, near Gamston airfield today. This was to unveil a new commemorative stone dedicated to the six members of the crew who were killed when their Lancaster bomber crashed.
The plane was returning from a night raid on Berlin, the 20 year old pilot was attempting,in very thick fog to land at nearby Gamston airfield when it tragically crashed. The last operational Lancaster bomber in Europe did a flypast tribute in their memory. Best viewed in light box.

The image of the left is a glass plate negative that came up for sale with some other plates. The other plates showed the construction of Dukeries Junction station and also the building of Tuxford North signalbox which are situated in between Newark and Retford on the former Great Northern line. Both were opened in 1896 so I assume this plate also dates from that time. Two workers can be seen in the shot one standing near the middle pillar and the other to the far right under one of the arches. He is standing next to a makeshift hut complete with chimney. Since that time the bridge has been strengthened to be able to stand the HST that speed over here at 125 mph, something the two workers in the glass plate would never have imagined possible. The bridge marks the end of the 1-200 climb up Gamston Bank on the ECML.

A superb original 35mm transparency recently came up for sale on Ebay taken at my local station. Colour views taken at Newark during steam days are very rare to find. The late Keith Pirt as far as I know never took any shots here preferring to be at Gamston Bank and Grantham when local. This view is full of interest to the railway enthusiast and was taken from the Sleaford Road bridge by Mike Sheridan. The date is June 1962 and here we see A3 Class 4-6-2 No 60109 Hermit departing the station with a Up express. We can see behind the 3rd & 4th coach the signalman's house near to Newark South Box. On the far left we have the Western Sidings and here and north of the station there were considerable amount of space for wagons etc..The Western Sidings were adjacent to the Joint line which connected the mainline to the Bottesford Branch. The station buildings can be seen in the background with the ex GN goods shed on the far left. Behind 60109 we can see Abott & Co,Engineers & Boiler Makers still on the same site today. Behind Abott & Co we have Ransome & Marles Factory, one of the biggest employers in the town. Opposite R&M the buildings are the same today now a MOT garage. All part of Northern Road Industrial Park. The cycle path to the old Joint line can be seen in the foreground.

Standing on the same bridge in 2012 I took this shot of Peppercorn A1 Class No 60163 Tornado working The Cathedrals Express charter. The area is like most of the network considerably overgrown but just behind the trees you can see the buildings of Abott & Co. This shot is not now possible in that this year work began on building a new housing estate on the old sidings land, recently the site of the clothing factory Meritina and the roof obstructs the view.
