It's always difficult to predict quite what's going to happen with a sunset, though after a while you do learn to a degree to interpret the clues in the sky in the hour or so beforehand. Sometimes the greatest colour occurs before the sun actually sinks from sight, but at other times the best colour develops slowly during the half-hour or so after the sun has set. I have learned to wait. Last night at Porth Dafarch there was good colour throughout but, half an hour after the sun had vanished, and it seemed that the colour was about to fade, 'boom!', this happened.
Note: This was shot handheld. I had already packed my gear away when I looked up to see this ;0)
