Malaysia - Kedah - Pulau Langkawi - Langkawi Island - Dusky Leaf Langur with Orange Coloured Baby

Two species of primate can be found in Langkawi. One is the ubiquitous Long-tailed or Crab-eating Macaque, Macaca fascicularis, common throughout Malaysia. The other is the Dusky Leaf Monkey or Spectacled Langur, Presbytis obscurus. Grey-black in colour, this species is easily recognised by the white rings around the eyes, which give the animal a constantly startled expression. During the day, the large social groups split up into smaller groups of less than 10 individuals which the visitor can easily see foraging in the lower branches of the forest canopy. In the late afternoon they may also come to ground level in forest clearings to feed on the young, tender leaf shoots which make up their diet. As with other species of Langur, the young have bright orange-brown fur.

Camera Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II; Lens: EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM; Focal length: 200.00 mm; Aperture: 4.0; Exposure time: 1/60 s; ISO: 1600

Langkawi, and some if its smaller islands, has a legendary reputation, with many places where myth and natural beauty seem to coincide. Many of its legends are all the more real, simply because its people are convinced of their authenticity. Langkawi simply means reddish brown eagle. Helang in malay it means eagle...shortened is "lang". Kawi means the colour reddish brown. That is why Langkawi's idol is an eagle coloured reddish brown!!

Langkawi offers some truly unforgettable sights and experiences when you visit the Kilim Nature Park; an escape to another world. Spread over an area of 100 sq km, the Kilim Nature Park features a beautiful mix of well-protected green mangrove forests, isolated white beaches and blue lagoons. As you cruise down the calm, winding river, you will observe the wonders of the park's marine ecosystem, its flora and fauna and the natural inhabitants such as the over-hanging 'Bogak Trees', Brown Eagles, Tree Crabs, Monitor Lizards and Macaques.

It was incredible experience to watch so many eagles fly above our heads and I took many shots of them. I was especially very happy to capture shot like this, when those two eagles started to fight while flying. Unfortunately 200mm is not a widelife lens and this is rather heavy crop, I'm still happy it is part of my Malaysian portfolio.

The Philippine tarsier, (Tarsius syrichta) is very peculiar small animal. In fact it is one of the smallest known primates, no larger than a adult men's hand. Mostly active at night, it lives on a diet of insects. Folk traditions sometimes has it that tarsiers eat charcoal, but actually they retrieve the insects from (sometimes burned) wood. It can be found in the islands of Samar, Leyte, Bohol, and Mindanao in the Philippines.

The Philippine tarsier is a tiny animal, measuring about 85 to 160 millimetres (3.35 to 6.30 in) in height makes this one of the smallest primates. The small size makes it difficult to spot. The mass for males is between 80 and 160 grams, usually lighter for females. The average adult is about the size of a human fist and will fit very comfortably in the human hand. Like all tarsiers, the Philippine tarsier's eyes are fixed in its skull; they cannot turn in their sockets. Instead, a special adaptation in the neck allows its round head to be rotated 180 degrees. The large membranous ears are mobile, appearing to be almost constantly moving, allowing the tarsier to hear any movement. It has uniquely large eyes, the largest eyes on any mammal in proportion to its body size. These huge eyes provide this nocturnal animal with excellent night vision.

"The world's smallest monkey" is an often heard slogan. However, it is not a monkey. In truth, its classification is somewhat problematic. Some scientists consider tarsiers to be a taxonomic suborder among the primates. While, because they are closely related to lemurs, lorises and bushbabies, others classify them with the prosimians to which these animals belong. Monkeys and apes belong to the suborder of anthropoids.

One way or the other, it is incredibly cute little animal and for me it will always be animal incaration of Jedi Yoda from the Star Wars.

The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although small and often pony-sized, they are considered horses by most Icelandic breed registries. The breed develops late, but is long-lived and hardy. The breed was developed from ponies brought to Iceland by Viking settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries. Horses were worshipped in Norse mythology, and these beliefs were brought to Iceland by the original settlers. The Icelandic breed is mentioned in both literature and historical records throughout Icelandic history, from the 9th century on, with the first historical reference to an individual horse appearing in the 12th century. Selective breeding has been used over the centuries to develop the breed into its current form. Natural selection has also played a role, with the harsh Icelandic climate killing many horses through cold and starvation. In the late 18th century, much of the breed was wiped out in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption. They are still used for traditional farm work in Iceland, as well as for leisure, showing and racing.

It is difficult to say which is my favorite shot from my trip to Iceland, however series of these shots of Icelandic horses in the mist must be one of the most mystical photoshoot ever. I remember that we drove back to Reykjavik from already amazing time at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall (where I got rather wet from the ever present spray of water). As it was nearly sunset time I was getting more and more restless about the right location for the setting sun. As we drove along the road we noticed group of horses on the field with the mist that was slowly picking up. Icelandic horses were on top of the list of shots I wanted to leave that amazing country with. I managed to get some photos with reasonably good light and background before this moment, however I could have never imagined situation like this. Some shots can be carefully planned and executed, some will never repeat itself, this is definitely one of those. Part of that amazing experience was also the chance to watch how the whole scene “grew on us”. If I was there with a person that is not into photography, I would have taken one or two shots and got back to car. The freedom to explore the whole scene and situation with someone that has the same interest (obsession) gave me opportunity to emerge into the moment and capture better and better photos (completely forgetting that I’m taking photos across sharply wired fence in rather high and very wet grass).

Situated 1,500 meters above sea level, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia’s largest and famous highland resort. It is surrounded by lush untouched greenery with a climate reminiscent of a cool spring day, is the perfect place to recharge your batteries and gain sweet relief from the pressures of the city.

Seeing a butterfly in the open is a rare sight these days. Get a change to see many different species of butterflies which used to be a common sight in the highlands many years ago. A walk through an enclosed area where each species of butterfly is happily floating around in a lush, plant-filled garden is the highlight. There are two butterfly farms in Cameron Highlands and the are both located around the Kea Farm area.

Visiting a place with so many beautiful butterflies was a real surprise and pleasure to look at. I have captured many photos of butterflies on the flowers, but then I thought it would not give it a right scale. Human hand seemed as a perfect way to show how large these butterflies are.
