Lake Khövsgöl (Mongolian: Хөвсгөл нуур, Khövsgöl nuur), also referred to as Khövsgöl dalai (Хөвсгөл далай, Khövsgöl ocean) or Dalai Eej (Далай ээж, ocean mother) is the largest lake in Mongolia by volume, and the second largest by area. Khövsgöl nuur is located in the northwest of Mongolia near the border to Russia, at the foot of the eastern Sayan Mountains. It is 1,645 m above sea level, 136 km long and 262 m deep. It is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia's fresh water and 0.4% of all the fresh water in the world.

The lake is surrounded by several mountain ranges. The highest mountain is the Bürenkhaan / Mönkh Saridag (3,492 m), which has its peak north of the lake exactly on the Russian-Mongolian border. The surface of the lake freezes over completely in winter. The ice cover gets strong enough to carry heavy trucks, so that transport routes were installed on its surface as shortcuts to the normal roads. However, this practice is now forbidden, to prevent pollution of the lake from both oil leaks and trucks breaking through the ice. It is estimated that 30-40 cars have sunk into the lake over the years. The Lake area is a National Park bigger than Yellowstone and strictly protected as a transition zone between Central Asian Steppe and Siberian Taiga.

Orkhon Khurkhree-Waterfall with a unique combination of volcanic eruption and earthquakes about 20000 years ago. The Orkhon waterfall is situated in the historically significant Orkhon Valley, whose river flows an incredible 1120km to the North before it joins the mighty Selenge Gol. It is also called Ulaan Tsutgala.

Yet another place that I didnt expect to see on my trip through Mongolia. The north and central part could not be more different to very flat and dry south. This particular shot was captured shortly after sunset when the sky was turning into my favorite dark blue color w ith still enough of warm color from the sunset to have slightly purple result.

Asia - Mongolia - Монгол улс - Land of Vast Steppes & Kind Nomads - Övörkhangai Province - Kharkhorin & adjacent to ancient city of Karakorum - Erdene Zuu Khiid - Эрдэнэ Зуу - Tibetan Buddhist Monastery - Most ancient surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia

The Erdene Zuu Monastery (Mongolian: Эрдэнэ Зуу) is probably the most ancient surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. It is in Övörkhangai Province, near the town of Kharkhorin and adjacent to the ancient city of Karakorum. It is part of the World Heritage Site entitled Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape. The Erdene Zuu monastery was built in 1585 by Abtai Sain Khan, upon the (second) introduction of Tibetan Buddhism into Mongolia. Stones from the ruins of Karakorum were used in construction. It is surrounded by a wall featuring 100 stupas. The number 108, being a sacred number in Buddhism, and the number of beads in a Buddhist rosary, was probably envisioned, but never achieved.

Here goes a shot that one would expect from Mongolia. The Erdene Zuu Monastery is a place I've seen already during my first trip to Mongolia, weather then was however just clear with blue sky, this time I was rewarded with more drama !! During the trip to North and Central part of Mongoliaa our guide was constantly talking about possible sand storm in Gobi desert and everytime she said it, I was praying that there wont be any as I'd love to play with shadows and lines of the desert dunes there. My prayers however didnt include this monastery and rightly so. When we arrived, it was rather clear sky with just few clouds here and there. After viewing different temples inside of the complex, the weather started the change. First regular storm with some rain and later huge cloud of sand arrived as well. This is the moment when combination of both arrived to the monastery.
