Asbestos Mitigation on the R/V Arctic Discoverer, Green Cove Springs, FL

After I disembarked, I just couldn't resist one more shot. What a fantastic subject and just look at all that texture!

One day I hope to login to Flickr and see someone has posted underwater photos of this ship in it's new life as an artificial reef.

Asbestos mitigation is serious business, Imagine wearing that outfit to work in the Florida heat with no a/c. Suddenly a boring desk job doesn't seem so bad. View wouldn't be as good though.

When you go in search of rust and crust, always be mindful of the dust. Probably should be a mantra or something.

Triple-sealed bags of asbestos await disposal on the deck of the famous treasure hunting ship, R/V Arctic Discoverer. A specialized team is stripping the vessel of all materials of environmental concern before it is sunk to begin a new life underwater as an artificial reef.

Thanks to Sylvia Noirot, CEO of the non-profit Florida Youth Maritime Training for welcoming us, and our cameras, aboard.

-- The current crew; three technicians removing the last of the asbestos from the wheelhouse. "Come aboard," they said, "it's all safe, just stay out of certain areas."

-- Preparations to have the vessel sunk as an artificial reef.
