This is a view of the Zaan River in North Holland. During Holland's Golden Age it was a main conduit of raw materials for many kinds of mills - especially sawmills - around what is today Zaandam. The area was industrially prosperous - think only of the lumber that was needed to build the Dutch fleets that sailed world-wide from the Arctic and the Baltic to both Americas, Africa, the Far East and the East Indies, the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean. It was a European place of shipbuilding innovation. In fact, Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725) stayed at Zaandam (1697) to learn the latest for the navies he was assembling to force an opening for virtually landlocked Russia to the Baltic and the Caspian and Black Seas. And their were many other products as well, among them spices from the East.
The Zaan River in the Dutch War for Independence from Spain (1568-1648) was a formidable barrier against Spanish armies and associated marauders. And it was strengthened again by the sconce thrown up along it (1574) by murderous Diederik Sonoy (1529-1597), prominent (sea-)Beggar, lieutenant-governor of North Holland for William the Silent, the leader of the young Dutch Republic. Sconce: hence the name Zaanse Schans.
So is this an ancient, historical place? In a sense, of course, yes, as is much of everything. But Zaanse Schans as such is an innovation and the gushing tourists - almost 2 million annually! - exclaiming 'So historical!' 'So quaint'. 'This is the way it really was!' are quite wrong.
This place was assembled between 1961 and 1974. It was decided to make the dike a repository of 'period' windmills and houses from the entire Zaan area, and large trailers were used to haul those structures here. The name 'Zaanse Schans' was proposed in 1952 and made official in 1961.
This photo was taken from a 'new' windmill reconstructed from parts of two late 19th and early 20th century mills from elsewhere in the Zaanstreek. The spicy aroma of what is now a shop selling spices and the pretty view, and the milling stones, low beams... 'Fake History' can't be all bad!
