One of four sperm whales we saw on our whale watch cruise. The ocean floor drops away abruptly just two kilometers off the Kaikoura shore. The town was originally a whaling town, now nicely reinvented as a whale watch town.
But what pigeons! The common pigeons of New Zealand (not to be confused with the New Zealand pigeon, which is much larger and very striking) have interbred with released doves of various kinds and show up in all sorts of lovely plumages. These were high above the Orewa beach.
