I found this drake wood duck sitting on a tree branch 40 feet off the ground. His wife was busy checking out a big hollow opening in a nearby bur oak tree, where she will likely start nesting very soon.

A few days ago I posted the photo of a rare dark morph broad-winged hawk at Lake Meyer Park. That bird was entirely black except for the white band on its tail. This broad-winged hawk has the normal coloration for broad-winged hawks, with some orange barring on a white belly. Broad-winged hawks are busy migrating north through the Driftless Region right now.
