The Death Valley Mesquite Dunes at Stovepipe Wells at sunrise. I shared this incredible sunrise with two other tiny photographers, on the dune ridge line.

An old mine shaft that the park service had not closed. I'm sure venturing into this old mine shaft would be interesting, but the chances of injury and death are high in doing so.

I read that the Park Service leaves this and other mines open so the bats can enter and depart.

We were visited by two little owls who escaped the heat on our back porch-patio and perched on the fireplace shelf. They were about seven inches tall. We are having a record heat wave here in Rancho Cucamonga, CA with our indoor/outdoor thermometer reaching a high July 6 at 112F. The sensor is near where the owls perched. Neighbor said their analog thermometer topped out at 117F. Our power went off at 4:00 P.M. but Edison got it back on around 9:00 P.M. Feels like Phoenix!

Theses little owls are most likely Californian great horned owls, Bubo virginianus pacificus.

They stuck around for about four hours not moving from their perch until the sun went down and it got cooler. I watched them fly off.

Not a very good photo as the spot they choose was in deep shade. Hand held at 1600 ISO. I did not want to get close as I did not want to spook them and make them fly off in the heat.
