During our Mountain High Workshop in California's Alabama Hills, I took our group to a rock formation that I thought would offer a good skyline for the sunset shoot. The sky was mostly clear but there was this one cloud formation that looked interesting. So I kept the group here during the entire sunset episode. We moved around a bit to get different foregrounds and skylines.
What was interesting is how we captured the formation and evolution of a lenticular cloud. These clouds form from high winds that come off mountains. The cloud becomes a stationary event. By that, I mean the cloud is not blown with the wind, but rather an atmospheric condition creates the cloud in one spot in the atmosphere. As time goes on, the high winds began to shape the cloud. When the sun began to set, we were treated to an extraordinary sunset.
One of the things I taught students in my workshops, is to be patient. Sometimes you get a masterpiece of a photograph.
