1968 Chevrolet Impala Convertable
Ft. Ancient Trading Post
Ft. Ancient, Ohio

5 Image HDR

I don't think there's very many folks in this world who can say they own the car that when they were born they came home from the hospital in, but I can. This car was my Dad's pride and joy, he had bought it right off the showroom floor of Joseph Chevrolet in Cincinnati, Ohio in August of 1968. Since then the cars been through a lot, after Dad passed away a sat unused for nearly 10 years (mom didn't handle Dad's passing well and wouldn't let anyone touch it), then after a half wit mechanic took his time rebuilding the original 327 engine the car was nearly totaled in a accident back in 2009 that also involved a 1970 Monte Carlo. After a full body restoration we've been running around Northern Ky and Cincinnati ever since. The winter was a little harsh and it quit running, so once the weather broke I had it towed, had a tune up done, installed some rear coil springs, and replaced the starter and on the road we were again. Needing to run the old gas out we drove it about 200 miles yesterday, the Ft. Ancient Trading Post was once of our stops and a great place to take a picture I think.

Abandoned Car
Black Hills National Forest
The Ghost Town Of Spokane
South Dakota

5 Image HDR

In my research for the trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota I discovered there was an abandoned mining town that was on public lands and I couldn't resist stopping by. Mostly deserted by the end of the 1950's several decaying cars scatter what's left of the city of Spokane as well as a few buildings including a leaning schoolhouse who's bee infested walls are going to collapse any day now.

1973 Volkswagen Squareback
Ky 90 and US 27
Parkers Lake, Kentucky

I’m not sure what it is about Southeastern Kentucky but there are so many abandoned/derelict classic automobiles it’s simply mind blowing. After leaving Cumberland Falls, we decided to head to Big South Fork and stop by Barthell Mining Camp, and along the way we came across this classic beauty. Unfortunately it was raining, so I didn’t get out of the car very long, and this wasn’t the only old car here, but the rest were in some mud and I wasn’t willing to muddy up the car. The others were much older and in non restorable shape. After we left here, the snow started, huge flakes too. Barthell was closed so we headed back and just as we left the Daniel Boone National Forest, the snow started sticking to the road a little. We had decided we were going to check out the first Kentucky Fried Chicken in Corbin, but because folks were driving 20 in a 55, with very little snow on the road I told Lisa I’d had enough and let’s go home.

Epilogue: Interestingly, we decided to drive around the Ft. Boonesborough area near Richmond on the way home and I came across a 100 ft. roadside cascading wet weather waterfall that flowed into the Kentucky River. It didn’t have much flow, so I’m sure I’m going to stop by after a good rain and take some shots of it in the future. I couldn’t find any info on it, but it had an overgrown viewing platform with some old steps, so I’m sure it’s got a name. Guess I’m just going to have to ask around next time I’m there.

1970 Plymouth Barracuda 442 Hardtop
Spring Grove Cemetery And Arboretum
Cincinnati, Ohio

I may own a '68 Impala convertible that I absolutely love, but I don't see any harm in going to a car show and taking in some scenery. The only problem I have when I go to one is, there's always so much photographic noise all around. People, cars parked too close together, not enough room to shoot and my pet peeve, the ever annoying hood, doors or trunk open. The 70 'Cuda is one of a handfull of automobiles that I'd love to own along with my Impala. The others: 1960 Cadillac DeVille, a 1963-68 Corvette, 1968 Charger, 1966 Ford GT 40, and a 1964-68 Buick Riviera. I'll never really understand my love for '60s automobiles, but it goes along with my love for 60's garage and psychedelic music.

Yep. That really is two cars flying through the air. Pretty amazing what a junkyard crane operator can do.
