Roebling Suspension Bridge
Ohio River
Skystar Wheel
Covington Kentucky arcross the river
Cincinnati, Ohio before the river
From the Carew Tower Observation Deck

Earlier this year I finally took the time to take some shots of the Skywheel on the Cincinnati Riverfront! This was the first time I had attempted to shoot it and I was hoping to combine it with a favorite pastime, photographing sunset. I have been wanting to return to the Carew Tower Observation Deck to shoot sunset for years. Well, sunset bombed out. Undeterred by a stiff southerly wind thought I'd try my hand out at the Skywheel. I expected it to be a challenge to photograph, and it was. I tried several different settings to see what effects I would get out of the ferris wheel. Though most of my shots were failures I did have one I really liked come out. I just love the pattern of the light and the Roebling Suspension Bridge close by.

Sunset
Doe Run Lake
Kenton County Park
Erlanger
Kenton County
Kentucky

This past Tuesday I shot up to my go-to sunset spot Doe Run Lake. Oddly it had only been my second trip up there this year as I had been going through a bit of a photography lull. Storms had pushed through earlier in the evening and I hoped there would be an sunset opportunity. Watching out my kitchen window it was looking more and more like I was going to get to do some shooting. I arrived to Doe Run about a half an hour early, parked close to the lake ramp and began playing on my phone and tuned in the Cincinnati Reds game. After about 15 minutes I began to think that it was going to be a dud and had turned on the car to leave. I gave it a few more minutes and as the clouds shifted it became evident I needed to get out my gear and set up. After my first spot I chose on a foot bridge had too much foliage covering the sky, I tried another spot below it. I definitely need to start planning these things out better, there was still too much foliage in my field of vision but made an adjustment and it wasn't long till sunset was hitting peak. I just loved the rays of light leading from the horizon! Wow! What a scene! And to think I almost bailed. What a close one that was!

John A Roebling Suspension Bridge
Cincinnati, Ohio Skyline
Ohio River
From Covington, Kentucky

The big news around here a few weeks ago was the flooding of the Ohio River after major rain events downstream and in the greater Cincinnati area inundated streams and rivers swelling the Ohio to 60.5 feet, the highest it's been since 1997. Of course I had to get out in it, so along with my lovely future wife Lisa and our good friend Bryan Janosick, we headed down to Covington, Kentucky riverside to nab some shots. I've seen the river this high before and it's always impressive but I think the thing that really blew my mind was how fast the water was moving. You could hear it loudly rushing around the southern pier, an amazing display of nature;s power.

Cincinnati, Ohio Skyline
Ohio River
From Covington, Ketucky

This past Saturday Lisa and I woke up to huge snowflakes falling outside the bedroom window. We had slept half the day because we had stayed up late bourboning the night before. Excited as well as a bit lethargic it took us a couple hours to get ourselves together to get out and do some shooting. We finally got out of the house around 4 and as we made our way through northern Kentucky the snowflakes had become smaller, and though there was about 2 inches of snow on the ground, you could see it was melting quickly. After swinging by the Garden Of Hope in Covington which has an overlook of Cincinnati we decided to head down to the riverfront. With all the recent heavy rain to the south and east the Ohio River is at flood stage and is forecasted to get even higher. When we arrived we were greeted with a very cool scene as the clouds were hanging on the buildings downtown. After I got off some shots it started misting heavily which ran us off pretty quickly. Worth getting up and heading out for sure!

The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge
Covington
Kentucky

I woke up yesterday morning with the intent of working on my website and then heading out for breffus. As things would turn out, a completely different set of events occurred when I got out of bed. Fog. Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati were under a dense fog alert. Within 45 minutes I had checked the traffic cameras to confirm everywhere was indeed enshrouded in fog, showered, got my fiancee awake and coffeed up, dog pottied, snacks and camera gear gathered and we were out the door! We headed down the 151 year old Roebling Suspension Bridge that crosses the Ohio River between Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. After shooting below the bridge and really not feeling it, Lisa and I headed up to the deck and started to scout some places to shoot the Kentucky side entrance. We decided to play Frogger. Setting up smack dab right in front, in the middle of the road, one watching for incoming traffic while the other shoots. It was both frustrating an fun! For this shot I thought I'd do something a little different and do a B&W conversion, something I haven't done in years. I've always been a huge fan of B&W and I just love how this turned out, I hope you all enjoy it too!
