One of the coolest waterfalls I have been to in Ohio is the East Falls Of The Black River! Located in the city of Elyria couldn’t believe what was in store when myself and good friends Jeff Burcher Photography and Bryan Janosick stopped for visit. An old dam, a 25 ft tall waterfall, a rainbow and some 100 year old abandoned ruins? Yes, please! The overlooks here are great but the real treat is to follow the trail down to the ruins and the base of the falls. As we walked the trail the amount of cinder, rust and broken glass really caught my eye. Years ago, as a teenager I enjoyed doing amateur archaeology. The city I grew up in and street I grew up on were loaded with old 19th and early 20th century dump sites and in some cases 19th century ruins. What really grabbed my attention were some pieces of plate glass. In all the years I’ve been waterfalling I had never seen old plate glass along a trail. Upon closer inspection I found several old bottle tops. I picked a couple up and dated them to the late 1800’s. Really cool! If I were a betting man I would lay money down that over 100 years ago nearby homes would simply dump their trash over the cliffs to the Black River below. Once we arrived at the ruins, with the water up we had to climb through a large opening in the foundation. Man, it was so cool! I’ve never seen anything like it! In one place close to the falls, a massive chunk of concrete dangled by a few steel bars. Above, a large opening was a doorway to the blue sky above. Stretching from the falls a half rainbow danced in the mist, but you know what? Just goes to show you that you don’t know everything. I didn’t realize my circular polarizer would actually hide the rainbow so because of that you can’t see it in this photo. It doesn’t really matter, the whole scene was mind blowing and I’m glad I came away with some shots of this experience that I really like!
