Developed in 2013, the Knightscope is the first fully-autonomous surveillance-based robot. It was inspired by the lag time related to the Sandy Hook Shooting as was designed to prevent future crime. With multiple cameras, it commits mass surveillance, scanning license plates, facial recognition and people's movements, temperature, etc. for suspicious activity, upon which authorities are contacted. It first appeared at Stanford Shopping Center at Stanford University around 2014, then expanded to the Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara/San Jose. There have been concerns about privacy issues, as well as the fear that the robot could be armed. In 2016 a Knightscope accidentally ran over a toddler, which the company apologized as a "freak accident" (the child was mostly unharmed).
