Originally built in 1170 spanning the wide Han River, the Guangji Bridge was famed as one of China's four famed ancient bridges. Originally a string of 86 pontoon boats, by 1200 it had converted to a cross between a beam bridge with 13 pavilion piers and a pontoon bridge in the center. In 1434 a reconstruction of the damaged bridge resulted in 10 piers on the west end, 13 piers on the east end, and 24 boats in the middle. In 1958 the entire span was converted to a beam bridge, however in 2009 it was returned to a mixed beam bridge/pontoon bridge. Only the bottom piers are original.
